The Baptist Catechism

Question 6: What things are chiefly contained in the holy scriptures?
Answer: The holy scriptures chiefly contain what man ought to believe concerning God, and what duty God requireth of man (2 Timothy 3:16-17; John 20:31; Acts 24:14; Ecclesiastes 12:13).

2 Timothy 3:16-17 “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.”

John 20:31 ” …but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”

Acts 24:14 “But this I confess to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, I worship the God of our fathers, believing everything laid down by the Law and written in the Prophets,”

Ecclesiastes 12:13 “The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.

What is a Catechism?
In I Corinthians 14:19 Paul says, “In the church I would rather speak five words with my mind, in order to INSTRUCT others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.” In Galatians 6:6 he says, “Let HIM WHO IS TAUGHT the word share all good things with HIM WHO TEACHES.” Acts 18:25 says that Apollos “had been INSTRUCTED in the way of the Lord.”

In each of these verses the Greek word for “instruct” or “teach” is ketecheo. From this word we get our English word “catechize”. It simply means to teach Biblical truth in an orderly way. Generally this is done with questions and answers accompanied by Biblical support and explanation.

  1. Do you still intend to post the rest of these at some point? My church is using the Baptist Catechism for instructing our children, and we would love to use this resource. We would buy it if we were able. But it is not on Amazon, Founders Press, or anywhere else that we have found. Thanks for your time and consideration.

I thoroughly agree with Mr. Eldridge! Is it possible for you to post the rest of these? We had the CD at one point, but it was damaged in a move.

  2. Sorry friends, my audio source for these files ran out at #15. I Dr. Jim Orrick is the one who made these CD’s, and he is a professor at Boyce College in Louisville, KY. It might be worthwhile reaching out to him by email to see if he has any connections to remaining hard copies. Or perhaps reaching out to Founder Press and seeing if they have any connections.

    Happy hunting men!
