Theology Matters

Across the board, no matter the scenario, theology matters.  Especially when it comes to presidential elections.  November 4, 2008 has come and gone, and as the days pile up post-election I am seeing and hearing a common reaction to our new presidential elect.  It seems the recurring theme from Christians is one of despair and fretting.  The exact opposite response that we Christians should have.  The right response to our next president would be a response of finding comfort in the peace and hope that is found in the God of the universe who is sovereign over all events in history.

In their lack of knowledge about the sovereign God, the average Christian runs to hair pulling and sweaty brows instead of remembering:

God is sovereign over kingdoms and authorities:
There is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.  (Romans 13:1)

The Most High God rules the kingdom of mankind and sets over it whom he will.  (Daniel 5:21)

God reigns over the nations; God sits on his holy throne.  (Psalm 47:8)

God reigns from His throne with all knowledge:
The Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord’s throne is in heaven; his eyes see, his eyelids test the children of man.  (Psalm 11:4)

God reigns from His throne with all infinitude:
The Lord will reign forever and ever.  (Exodus 15:18)

God’s decrees are trustworthy:
Your decrees are very trustworthy; holiness befits your house, O Lord, forevermore.  (Psalm 93:5)

God’s sovereignty is total:
The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.  (Proverbs 16:33)

The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; he turns it wherever he will.  (Proverbs 21:1)

God’s sovereignty is perfectly inerrant:
All the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, “What have you done?” (Daniel 4:35)

God sovereignly uses man’s free agency as a planned means to His own goals:
As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.  (Genesis 50:20)

This Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.  (Acts 2:23)

For truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place.  (Acts 4:27-28)

Friends, rest in the sovereignty of God knowing it is the good and perfect will of God which ushered in Barack Obama.  The coming years I believe will usher in hardships aimed at the Church, but if these hardships accomplish the strengthening and growth of God’s bride then may God’s will be done.

Soli deo gloria.
